Firestone and Bridgestone Tires
Nearly 14.5 million Firestone and Bridgestone tires, mostly those originally installed on Ford Explorers have been recalled. The recall has astonished and angered Congress, drivers and passengers, and motor vehicle experts throughout the country.

Firestone/Bridgestone and Ford continue to point the guilty finger at each other in terms of product liability, and it may take a long time for the courts and legislators to assign the blame. The auto lobby has successfully hindered federal action on many safety issues for the past 27 years. This will likely end soon as Congressional hearings continue to make headlines in the coming weeks. Consumer complaints, recent advisories and recall updates can be found at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration web site by clicking, or the consumer group, Public Citizen.

Here are some incontrovertible facts that you should be aware of: SUV's are involved in a disproportionate number of serious rollover accidents and crashes. Last year, rollovers were a factor in nearly 30 percent of the highway fatalities. And a New York Times analysis concluded that a rollover was the first thing that went wrong in more than 38 percent of those deaths. So far, defective Firestone/Bridgestone tires have been directly linked to at least 88 deaths since 1992 and an undetermined number of accidents. Many have resulted in personal injury.

Firestone tires included in the recall were installed as original equipment on these vehicles*

Model Years Manufacturer Model
1991-2000 Ford Explorer
1996-2000 Mercury Mountaineer
1991-2000 Ford Ranger (pick up)
1991-1994 Ford F-series Trucks
1991-1994 Ford Bronco
1994-1996 Mazda B-series (pick up)
1991-1994 Mazda Navajo

*Note: Not all tires on these vehicles are included in the recall. *Note: Tires are being recalled regardless of the vehicle they are mounted on. The recall includes all Firestone ATX tires and the P235/75R15 sizes manufactured since 1991 and all Wilderness AT tires of that same size manufactured at Firestone's Decatur, IL plant. Firestone has estimated that about 6.5 million of these tires were still in service as of that date.
